Steps

1. Observe the cat from a distance, undisturbed and unrestrained, in a quiet space for at least a few minutes before scoring.
2. Score ear position 0-2 based on the published FGS descriptions, recording the specific ear position observed.
3. Score orbital tightening (squint) 0-2, muzzle tension 0-2, whisker change 0-2, and head position 0-2 the same way, recording the specific cue observed for each.
4. Sum the five action-unit scores to a total from 0 to 10.
5. Compare the total to the published analgesia threshold of 4 out of 10 and to any prior FGS screen for the same cat.
6. Confirm and record that no human medication was given to the cat.
7. Route any score at or above 4/10, or a sustained rising trend below it, to a veterinarian by name or clinic type.
