Steps

1. Score the horse's body condition on the 9-point Henneke scale across the six regions (neck, withers, shoulder, ribs, loin, tailhead), recording the findings that justify the score.
2. Note whether the horse carries a cresty neck, a distinct, firm fat deposit along the crest, as a separate finding from the overall BCS.
3. Clean each hoof with a hoof pick and visually inspect the hoof wall for cracks, growth-ring divergence (wider at the heel than the toe), and overall wall condition.
4. Record the current trim or shoeing interval and the date of the last farrier visit.
5. With the horse standing still, gently check each hoof for unusual heat and, if trained to do so, check for a bounding digital pulse at the fetlock.
6. Compare the BCS to the ideal working range, approximately 4-6, breed and use dependent, and the hoof findings to the prior round when one exists.
7. Route any BCS of 7 or above with a cresty neck, or any hoof-laminitis sign, to a veterinarian and/or farrier per the decision rules.
