Most colony losses trace back to something visible weeks earlier: a failing queen, a thinning brood pattern, empty stores, or, rarely but catastrophically, American foulbrood. A structured inspection catches the ordinary problems a beekeeper can fix directly, and gives the rare AFB sign nowhere to hide before it spreads to every hive in the yard.

How this work is done

Steps

1. Put on full bee suit, veil, and gloves; light and check the smoker before opening the hive.
2. Approach the hive from the side, apply a few puffs of smoke at the entrance, wait briefly, then remove the outer cover and apply smoke across the top bars.
3. Remove frames one at a time starting from the outer edge, working toward the brood nest, and set each aside gently to avoid crushing bees.
4. On each frame, record whether eggs, larvae, and capped brood are present in a solid pattern (queen-right sign) and note any spotty or missing pattern.
5. Record capped honey and pollen stores observed across the frames.
6. Inspect every capped-brood cell for sunken or perforated cappings; where a cell looks suspect, insert a toothpick into the cell and slowly withdraw it, recording whether the contents string into a ropey, mucoid thread of roughly an inch.
7. Photograph any suspect cell and its ropey-test result before closing the hive.
8. Close the hive, replacing frames in their original order, and record the full inspection on the data sheet with colony ID and date.
9. If any ropey-test-positive or suspect capping sign is found, do not sample further, treat, or move equipment between hives; report the finding to the state apiarist / apiary inspection program by name immediately.

What is promised, and what is not
