Steps

  1. 1. Select the Xerces guide matching the site type (yards/gardens/parks, farms, or natural areas/rangelands) and, if the site sits in rusty patched bumble bee range, add the species-specific form.
  2. 2. Walk the site and record bloom presence separately for spring, summer, and fall, naming any season with no forage as a gap.
  3. 3. Survey and record both ground-nesting habitat (bare or sparsely vegetated soil) and cavity/stem-nesting habitat (dead wood, pithy or hollow stems, bunch grasses).
  4. 4. Record pesticide-use history from the site owner or manager, and measure buffer/setback distances between any spray zone and forage or nesting habitat.
  5. 5. Score each category (Foraging, Nesting, Pesticide Practices, Community Action) per the matching Xerces guide's point scale.
  6. 6. Photograph representative forage, nesting habitat, and any buffer zones.
  7. 7. Log any bumble bee (or other target pollinator) observed, with date, location, and photo where possible, identifying to species only when confidently distinguishable using the interactive key or field guide, and never assuming an ID.
  8. 8. Where a candidate rusty patched bumble bee sighting occurs, photograph it at a respectful distance only, and route the photo to the Xerces Society reporting tool or the state natural heritage program for expert confirmation.
  9. 9. Write a dated, site-owner-actionable improvement plan naming a fix for every category gap found.
