Steps

  1. 1. Select and mark a fixed milkweed patch or set of plants at the site using flagging tape or stakes, and complete the MLMP yearly site description.
  2. 2. Conduct the initial milkweed-density survey, counting all milkweed stems at a small site or a defined sample plot at a larger site.
  3. 3. On the same fixed patch, visit weekly through the local breeding season at a consistent time of day.
  4. 4. Examine each marked milkweed plant's leaves (top and underside), stems, and flower buds for monarch eggs and larvae without removing or disturbing the plant.
  5. 5. Classify every larva found by instar (1st through 5th) using the MLMP identification key's size and feature criteria, not an estimated age.
  6. 6. Record the count of eggs and each instar class, plant condition, and any signs of predation or parasitism observed.
  7. 7. Photograph representative eggs/larvae and the patch condition.
  8. 8. Leave every egg, larva, and adult monarch exactly where found; never collect, relocate, or rear any life stage.
  9. 9. Enter the week's site description, milkweed density, and instar-classified counts into the MLMP data system or a running log for submission.

What is promised, and what is not
