Inspect the tree's crown, trunk, and root zone for a Level-1 visual health check. Most tree failures give warning signs for months or years, but keepers and municipal staff without arboriculture training miss dieback, deadwood, conks, and root-zone changes until a limb or a whole tree comes down. A structured Level-1 limited visual walk-around, the same entry tier ISA-trained arborists start from, catches the sign early and routes it to a licensed arborist while it is still a phone call, not an emergency.

Steps

  1. 1. Walk to the tree and record its GPS location; identify every target within striking distance of the tree (people, vehicles, structures, play areas) and list them.
  2. 2. Observe the crown from the ground: record dieback proportion, any lean or recent change in lean, and any broken or hanging limbs positioned over a target.
  3. 3. Observe the trunk: record cavities, cracks, seams, included bark, fungal conks or brackets, and bark damage or wounds.
  4. 4. Observe the root zone and base: record soil heaving, exposed or severed roots, girdling roots, conks over roots, and any recent grade change or nearby construction or trenching.
  5. 5. Photograph the crown, trunk, and root zone from angles that document each observed condition.
  6. 6. If any risk sign is found near a target, route it to a named ISA Certified Arborist or the ISA's own arborist-search resource (treesaregood.org/Find-an-Arborist or isa-arbor.com) before the record closes.
  7. 7. Enter all crown, trunk, root-zone, and target observations, the photos, the GPS point, and the arborist routing (if any) into the proof record; sign it.

Proof is measured against these, not judged by taste.

What is promised, and what is not

Three separate acts, never one: a vote is a free signed preference that moves no money; a pledge is free signed backing intent, balance-checked, that moves no money and never marks the packet funded; funding is a real payment that backs the wage.
