• The tree and its full root zone, viewed from multiple angles at a safe distance
• Binoculars for the upper crown
• A notebook or form with one section per structural zone (crown, trunk, root zone)
• A way to estimate distance from the tree to its nearest target (path, structure, parking, seating, power line)

Steps

1. 1. Walk a full circle around the tree at a safe distance; view the crown from at least two angles, using binoculars for the upper canopy.
2. 2. Crown: look for dieback (proportion of dead vs live branches), abnormal lean or a recent lean change, broken or hanging limbs (widowmakers), and dead branches positioned over a target.
3. 3. Trunk: look for cavities, cracks, seams, included bark at major forks, fungal conks/brackets/mushrooms on the trunk or at the base, oozing, and areas of bark loss or mechanical damage.
4. 4. Root zone: look for soil heaving or mounding, exposed or severed roots, girdling roots at the root flare, mushrooms/conks growing over roots, and any recent grade change or excavation nearby.
5. 5. Identify and record every target within striking distance of the tree — anywhere people, vehicles, or structures could be if a part failed.
6. 6. Write a plain descriptive record (present/absent + what was seen) per zone. This is a Level-1 limited visual assessment ONLY — never assign a numeric risk rating and never diagnose the cause or extent of decay.
7. 7. Any risk sign found near a target routes to an ISA Certified Arborist immediately (via treesaregood.org/Find-an-Arborist or isa-arbor.com); route before finishing the record if the sign looks severe.
