Steps

  1. 1. Identify the sampling zone by planting use and history (vegetable bed, lawn, new bed) and keep zones separate rather than compositing across different uses.
  2. 2. Photograph the zone and record its GPS location before sampling.
  3. 3. Using a clean probe or trowel, pull 10 to 15 cores per zone at the depth the lab specifies (typically 0 to 6 inches for turf and garden beds), removing surface debris and mulch first.
  4. 4. Combine the cores from one zone in the clean bucket, break up clumps, and mix thoroughly to form one composite sample; discard rocks and roots.
  5. 5. Fill the lab's own sample bag to its stated line, label it with the zone name, date, and submitter contact, and complete the submission form exactly as the lab instructs.
  6. 6. Submit the sample with any required fee to the named land-grant lab (Penn State AASL, UMass Amherst, or the sampler's own state's land-grant lab) and record the submission date and any tracking number.
  7. 7. When the report returns, transcribe its pH and nutrient findings and its recommendation verbatim into the proof record; never substitute a packet-authored rate for the lab's own number.
  8. 8. If the zone is a food garden near a road, an old painted structure, or an industrial history, add the lab's lead/heavy-metal test option or contact the extension office for a contamination-specific protocol before growing food there.

What is promised, and what is not
