Steps

1. Record the grow area's temperature, relative humidity, and fresh-air-exchange (FAE) condition before touching any substrate.
2. Visually inspect each substrate block or bag without opening or disturbing it first; photograph the block from multiple angles.
3. Look for green mold (Trichoderma spp., a fast-spreading substrate-competitor), cobweb mold (Cladobotryum spp., a fine gray web-like growth), and bacterial blotch (Pseudomonas tolaasii, a slimy yellow-brown discoloration on mushroom caps).
4. Photograph any suspected contamination before disturbing it, noting the block ID, contaminant type, and extent.
5. Put on gloves and a mask, then isolate any contaminated block by moving it away from healthy blocks immediately.
6. Discard contaminated substrate completely; never trim, salvage, or continue growing a contaminated block, and never harvest mushrooms from it for food.
7. Sanitize tools and surfaces that contacted the contaminated block with 70% isopropyl alcohol before returning to healthy blocks.
8. Review the sterile/sanitary technique used during inoculation and handling (glove use, surface sanitation, FAE control) against the source protocol, and record any gap identified.
9. Log the environmental readings, contamination findings, disposal action, and technique review on the data sheet with date and photos.
