Steps

1. Approach the tree from the ground only; never climb the tree or use a ladder to inspect it at height.
2. Identify the tree species where possible, and record its size (trunk diameter) and location relative to nearby targets (structures, walkways, parking, seating areas).
3. Walk around the base, root flare, and visible trunk, looking for fungal fruiting bodies (conks, brackets, shelf mushrooms).
4. Photograph every fruiting body found with its exact position on the tree, plus a whole-tree context shot.
5. Record other visible external decay indicators without diagnosing them: cavities, cracked or missing bark, deadwood in the canopy (viewed with binoculars from the ground), and insect or woodpecker activity.
6. Note any recent lean, root-plate heaving, large cracks, or signs of recent limb failure.
7. Do not attempt to determine internal decay extent, assign a hazard rating, or recommend any tree-care action; that is ISA Certified Arborist / TRAQ-holder work.
8. Route the finding to an ISA Certified Arborist or TRAQ holder by name as a decay flag, with the photos and location.
9. Log the tree ID, all findings, photos, and the referral into the proof record with date and GPS.

What is promised, and what is not
