Steps

1. Select the sampling point closest to the well, before any treatment device (softener, filter) unless the lab's protocol specifies otherwise, and photograph it with GPS recorded.
2. Follow the certified lab's own bottle and kit instructions exactly for each parameter: total coliform bacteria, nitrate as N, total dissolved solids, and pH.
3. Don gloves before handling sample bottles and disinfect the tap per the lab's instructions before drawing the coliform sample, without touching the inside of the bottle or cap.
4. Fill each bottle to its stated line, cap immediately, and label each with the parameter, date, and time.
5. Complete and sign the chain-of-custody form, keep samples cool if the lab requires it, and ship or deliver to the certified laboratory within its stated hold time.
6. When results return, record all five values with units exactly as reported: total coliform (present/absent), E. coli if reflex-tested, nitrate as N in mg/L, TDS in mg/L or ppm, and pH.
7. Compare each result only to its own published standard, coliform/E. coli as presence-absence and nitrate against the EPA 10 mg/L MCL; never write a household 'safe' or 'unsafe' verdict for the whole water supply.
8. Route any out-of-standard result per the decision rules and record exactly where it was routed (local health department, alternative water source, clinician).
