Inspect the wellhead cap, casing, and grading for a contamination pathway into the aquifer. A well's water quality starts at the wellhead: a cracked cap, grading that pools water at the casing, or a setback shortfall from a septic system or livestock area is a direct, physical pathway for contamination into the aquifer a household drinks from. An old unused well on the property, left open, is worse. Land-grant extension well-stewardship programs turn that into a checklist any keeper can walk and a licensed contractor can act on.

How this work is done

Steps

1. Walk to the wellhead and record its GPS location; photograph the overall wellhead and casing before close inspection.
2. Inspect the well cap and seal for security, tamper-resistance, and vermin-proofing, and confirm the screened vent is intact; photograph and record any crack, gap, or missing vent screen.
3. Measure the casing height above final grade and observe whether the ground slopes away from the wellhead or pools water at the casing; photograph the grading.
4. Measure and record the setback distance from the wellhead to the nearest septic tank or drainfield, livestock area, and fuel or chemical storage; compare each to the cited state or local well-construction minimum.
5. Walk the rest of the property for any unused or abandoned well; if found, record its exact location and condition with photos.
6. Never enter a well pit, vault, or any confined space during this audit; observe and photograph from ground level and outside the structure only.
7. Route every deficiency found by name: a damaged cap, seal, or casing routes to a licensed well contractor; a setback shortfall routes to the state or local well program or health department; any unused or abandoned well routes to a licensed well contractor for proper decommissioning (sealing).
8. Enter every finding, measurement, photo, and routing into the proof record; sign it.

What is promised, and what is not
