Fast-growing broiler strains commonly carry lameness rates keepers never measure: published surveys using the Bristol gait-scoring scale found 14-50% of conventional broiler flocks scoring 3-5 (impaired-to-unable-to-walk) at market age (Kestin et al. 1992), and lame birds have been shown to self-select an analgesic over plain feed , meaning gait score is a pain signal, not a cosmetic one (Danbury et al. 2000). Steps

1. Select a representative sample of birds from the flock using a stated method (for example, every Nth bird encountered along a walked transect) and record the sample size.
2. Encourage each sampled bird individually to walk a short, unobstructed, flat, dry lane of about 3-5 meters, without chasing or handling it roughly.
3. Score each bird's gait 0-5 on the Bristol scale, from 0 (normal, agile) through 5 (unable to walk or stand), recording the score against the bird's pen or row location.
4. Inspect each sampled bird's hocks and footpads for contact-dermatitis signs (hock burn, footpad lesions, breast blisters) and record alongside its gait score.
5. Tally the flock-level score distribution and the share scoring 3 or higher, and compare it to the prior round's distribution when one exists.
6. Separate and route any bird scoring 4 or 5, or showing pain or isolation behavior, per the decision rules.
7. Enter the sample method, per-bird scores, dermatitis findings, and flock distribution into the proof record; sign.
