Photograph a bumble bee's face, abdomen, and thorax without handling it for Bumble Bee Watch. Bumble bee populations are declining across North America, but most sightings never reach anyone who can use them. A bee seen in a garden and forgotten teaches science nothing. Bumble Bee Watch turns a phone camera into real data: a face-shot-anchored photo set, submitted with date and location, becomes an expert-verified species record in a continent-wide dataset used to track range shifts and decline, including for the endangered rusty patched bumble bee.

Steps

  1. 1. Navigate to the site (garden, park, farm, or natural area with blooming forage); record GPS coordinates, date, and weather.
  2. 2. Locate a foraging bumble bee on a flower without disturbing it or the plant.
  3. 3. Set the camera to macro or close-up mode and switch to burst/continuous shooting.
  4. 4. Photograph the bee from the front to capture a clear face shot, since facial coloration and structure are load-bearing identification characters.
  5. 5. Photograph the bee's abdomen color pattern and thorax band/dot pattern from the side and top, without netting, chilling, or handling the bee.
  6. 6. Record the flower species visited, if known, and the observation time.
  7. 7. Using the Bumble Bee Watch interactive key, propose a tentative species identification from the photo set and mark it clearly as tentative.
  8. 8. Submit the date, location, photos, and tentative ID to bumblebeewatch.org or the official app for expert-verifier review.
  9. 9. If the bee resembles a rusty patched bumble bee (Bombus affinis), photograph only at a respectful distance and never approach closer to confirm; note this in the submission.

What counts as done

  • Photo set includes a face shot plus top and side abdomen/thorax views, taken with macro/burst mode where available
  • Date, location, and (optionally) flower visited recorded and submitted through bumblebeewatch.org or the official app
  • Confirmation recorded that the bee was never netted, chilled, handled, or collected during photography
  • Any self-proposed species ID recorded as tentative, pending Bumble Bee Watch's official expert-verifier review

Proof is measured against these, not judged by taste.

What is promised, and what is not

Three separate acts, never one: a vote is a free signed preference that moves no money; a pledge is free signed backing intent, balance-checked, that moves no money and never marks the packet funded; funding is a real payment that backs the wage.
