What the work involvesMost municipalities and neighborhood groups have no real count of their street trees — species mix, size distribution, canopy condition — so planting, removal, and budget decisions get made blind. i-Tree Eco, the USDA Forest Service's current flagship inventory tool (the older i-Tree Streets tool it superseded is now explicitly listed as legacy), turns a walk down the block into standardized per-tree records — species, trunk diameter, crown condition, light exposure — that feed directly into the software's own peer-reviewed ecosystem-service and canopy-benefit estimates.
How this work is done
A documented method, so this packet comes out the same whoever does it.
Bring
- A DBH tape or diameter tape (reads diameter directly when wrapped around the trunk)
- A tree/plant-ID reference or app for species identification
- A smartphone with GPS/location services, or a paper form with a site map, for per-tree location
- The current i-Tree Eco field data form or app (itreetools.org) to enter or export records
Steps
- 1. Confirm i-Tree Eco (not the legacy i-Tree Streets tool) is the current version being used; download the current field data form or use the app before starting.
- 2. Identify the species of each tree in the inventory area; if uncertain, photograph it and flag the record for expert ID rather than guessing.
- 3. Measure DBH (diameter at breast height) with the tape at the standard 4.5 ft (1.37 m) height on the uphill side of any sloped ground, recorded to the nearest tenth of an inch or centimeter.
- 4. Estimate and record Crown Light Exposure (CLE) on the 0-5 scale — the number of sides (of five possible: top plus four compass-ish sides) receiving direct light — using the i-Tree Eco field guidance; if genuinely unsure, leave it for the software's own default rather than guessing a precise number.
- 5. Record the crown-dieback condition band (e.g. Fair 10-25% dieback, Poor 25-50% dieback, Dead 100%) as a visual estimate — never a climbed or instrumented measurement.
- 6. Record the tree's location (GPS point or address + position) and land-use context (street tree, park, yard, etc.).
- 7. While measuring, watch for any structural risk sign (crack, cavity, hanging limb, sudden lean, conks); if seen, note it and route that specific tree to the separate ISA Level-1 visual health-check packet and an ISA Certified Arborist — do not attempt to assess or rate the risk here.
- 8. Enter or export the completed per-tree dataset in i-Tree Eco-compatible form, noting the total trees inventoried and any tree skipped as inaccessible or refused.
What counts as done
- Species identified (or flagged uncertain and routed for expert ID) and DBH measured at the standard 4.5 ft (1.37 m) breast height with a diameter or DBH tape, recorded per tree
- Crown Light Exposure (CLE, 0-5 scale) and crown-dieback condition band (e.g. Fair 10-25%, Poor 25-50%, Dead 100%) recorded per the i-Tree Eco field protocol
- Each tree's location recorded (GPS point or address + side/position) and land-use context noted (street, park, yard, etc.)
- The completed dataset entered or exported in i-Tree Eco-compatible form, with the total trees inventoried and any refused/inaccessible trees noted
