Test your water for PFAS at a certified lab using EPA Method 533 or 537.1. PFAS ('forever chemicals') sit in an unusually fast-moving regulatory moment: EPA finalized the first national PFAS drinking-water rule in 2024, and as of this writing two more rulemakings are still in progress, one that would extend the PFOA/PFOS compliance deadline and one that would rescind the MCLs for four other PFAS. A household can't wait for the dust to settle to know its own exposure. A certified-lab test read against whichever standards are ACTUALLY enforceable today, plus an honest flag on what's still in flux, is the only way to know now.

Steps
- 1. Before sampling, review and follow the lab's clean-hands/dirty-hands protocol: avoid fast food packaging, cosmetics, sunscreen, and waterproof or Teflon-treated gear on the sampling day.
- 2. Confirm which analytical method the lab will run, EPA Method 533 or EPA Method 537.1 Version 2.0, and use the bottle set the lab provides for that method.
- 3. Don powderless nitrile gloves and keep all fluoropolymer (PTFE/Teflon) material away from the sample and sampling area.
- 4. Collect the sample directly into the lab-provided HDPE bottle per the method's instructions; never rinse the bottle with sample water first.
- 5. Collect a field blank alongside the sample using the lab-provided blank water, following the same handling steps.
- 6. Cool both containers immediately, complete the chain-of-custody form, and ship to the accredited laboratory within its stated hold time.
- 7. Record any known nearby PFAS source (current or former military base, airport, firefighting-foam training site, industrial manufacturing) as awareness context only, never as a substitute for the lab result.
- 8. When results return, report PFOA and PFOS in ppt (ng/L) against the current 4.0 ppt MCL for each, and report every other panel analyte's value while flagging its regulatory status: PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA (GenX), PFBS, and the Hazard Index are proposed for rescission and unresolved as of this writing, never compared to a number treated as settled.

- Certified laboratory named, samples collected per its own kit instructions, and the analytical method recorded (EPA Method 533 or 537.1)
- PFOA and PFOS results reported in ppt (ng/L) and compared explicitly to the current 4.0 ppt MCL for each; no household 'safe' verdict written
- Results for PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA (GenX), PFBS, and any other panel analyte reported with values, with the CURRENT regulatory status of their MCLs stated explicitly (proposed for rescission as of this writing) rather than compared to a number no longer treated as settled
- Any known nearby PFAS source (current/former military base, airport, firefighting-foam training site, industrial manufacturing) recorded as awareness context, never as a substitute for the lab result

What is promised, and what is not
