Steps

1. 1. ASSESS: photograph the areaway floor, drain grate and walls as found; note standing water depth, debris type, and whether the drain outlet appears connected to a functioning line (vs. an unknown or dry-well routing).
2. 2. Clear leaves, trash and sediment from the areaway floor and drain grate by hand; bag debris for disposal.
3. 3. Lift the drain grate only if it lifts freely by hand and clear the visible trap of debris with a hand auger/drain snake to the depth it reaches naturally; reseat the grate.
4. 4. Pour a test bucket of water into the drain and confirm it clears within a few minutes; photograph the finished areaway and note any standing water or slow drainage for the follow-on regrade/waterproof job.
