How this work is done

A documented method, so this packet comes out the same whoever does it.

Bring

  • right-of-way permit + the approved temporary traffic-control plan, cones, signs and, where required, a flagger
  • MUTCD-spec marking paint or thermoplastic with the specified glass-bead retroreflective media
  • stencils and layout string or chalk line sized to the MUTCD pattern
  • surface preparation tools: broom, blower, and a scraper for failed marking
  • hi-vis apparel to ANSI/ISEA 107, gloves, respirator suited to the coating
  • camera + GPS phone + a thermometer for the surface-temperature check

Steps

  1. 1. ASSESS: photograph the existing marking as found, record which MUTCD pattern applies, and confirm the permit and the approved traffic-control plan for this closure.
  2. 2. Set the temporary traffic control exactly as the approved plan draws it, including the pedestrian detour, before any work in the roadway begins.
  3. 3. Prepare the surface: sweep and blow clean, remove failed marking, and confirm the surface is dry and within the coating's temperature window.
  4. 4. Lay out the pattern to MUTCD dimensions (bar width, spacing, stop-bar setback) and check it against the layout before any paint goes down.
  5. 5. Apply the marking to the specified wet-film thickness and broadcast the glass beads at the specified rate while the coating is still wet.
  6. 6. VERIFY: measure the finished bar widths and spacing against the MUTCD dimensions, hold the closure for the full cure time, then reopen and remove the traffic control.
  7. 7. Photograph the finished marking from the before vantage, log the permit reference, product, and cure time, and enter them in the proof record.
