What the work involves

The historic park's three surviving 1936 buildings have no on-site signage telling visitors what they're looking at or why the site is on the National Register, and the Dust Bowl-era history this camp represents -- the model for Steinbeck's Weedpatch Camp in The Grapes of Wrath -- goes unexplained to anyone walking through.

How this work is done

A documented method, so this packet comes out the same whoever does it.

Bring

  • hydraulic floor jacks rated to the structural load
  • laser level / string line + floor-elevation survey tape
  • pressure-treated shims and/or new concrete/steel piers per engineer spec
  • moisture meter (source-control check before closing the work)
  • camera + tablet for the elevation survey and photo log

Steps

  1. 1. Verify the licensed foundation-repair contractor's structural plan and permit; photograph the crawlspace access, existing piers/beams, and any moisture source (standing water, plumbing leak, poor grading) before work.
  2. 2. Run a floor-elevation survey (laser level grid) and mark the low points against the structural plan; record every reading.
  3. 3. The licensed crew sets jacks, relevels beams to the plan's target elevation, and replaces or shims piers per the engineer's spec -- never load beyond the rated jack capacity.
  4. 4. Correct the moisture source found in step 1 (grading, downspout redirect, or vapor barrier per the crawlspace's condition) so the releveling isn't undone by the next wet season.
  5. 5. Re-survey the floor elevation to confirm it meets the plan's target, verify door/window operation upstairs, and photograph the finished piers/beams and crawlspace.
  6. 6. Pass the local building-permit inspection where required; enter the before/after elevation survey, permit reference, and photos into the proof record; sign it.
