How this work is done

A documented method, so this packet comes out the same whoever does it.

Bring

  • NSF/ANSI 42/53/58-certified unit matched to the flagged contaminant and rated for the fixture's duty cycle
  • plumbing hand tools (wrench, tubing cutter, thread sealant), or a licensed plumber where the building or the jurisdiction requires one
  • sample bottles for the post-install re-sample, collected to the same protocol as the original result
  • labels and the building's fixture/asset tags
  • camera and a GPS-capable phone

Steps

  1. 1. Confirm with the facility manager which fixture is being treated, that it is on the building's fixture inventory, and what the flagged result actually was: contaminant, concentration, sample date, and whether it was a first-draw or flushed sample. An institutional building's sampling plan is a regulated document; read it rather than assuming.
  2. 2. Select an NSF/ANSI-certified device rated to reduce THAT contaminant at the flow and duty cycle the fixture actually sees. A drinking fountain in a school corridor is not a kitchen tap, and a unit sized for a home will fail early on an institutional duty cycle.
  3. 3. Confirm before touching the plumbing whether the jurisdiction or the building requires a licensed plumber, a permit, or a backflow review for this installation. Where it does, the install is theirs; document the scope and hand it over.
  4. 4. Shut off the local supply, notify anyone who uses the fixture that it is out of service, install the device per the manufacturer's instructions, and restore service.
  5. 5. Flush and prime the device through the manufacturer's full start-up procedure before the fixture is returned to drinking use, and keep it signed out of service until that is finished.
  6. 6. Re-sample using the same protocol as the original result and confirm the flagged contaminant is below the action level. A different sampling protocol produces a different number and proves nothing.
  7. 7. Label the unit with the install date and the next filter-change date, add it to the building's maintenance schedule so the change actually happens, and give the facility manager a plain-language card covering what it does, what it does not do, and who services it.
  8. 8. Enter photos, GPS/address, the device model and certification, the before and after results with their sample dates, and the schedule entry; sign.

  • Post-install retest reading confirming the contaminant is below the safety threshold
