What the work involves

Colorado is the real site of the landmark thyroid-prevalence study that put a number on 'quietly common': the Colorado Thyroid Disease Prevalence Study (Canaris et al. 2000, Arch Intern Med 160(4):526-534) surveyed 25,862 people at a statewide 1995 Colorado health fair and found 9.5% had elevated TSH (hypothyroidism) and 2.2% had decreased TSH (hyperthyroidism) -- real numbers from real Coloradans, not a modeled estimate. The thyroid sets metabolic rate; subclinical hypo- or hyperthyroidism quietly shifts energy, mood, lipids, and cognition and grows more common with age. TSH is the cheap first-line screen that catches it, offered here in the state where the scale of the problem was first properly measured.
