Steps
- 1. Identify the accredited veterinary diagnostic laboratory that will run the count and confirm it uses the McMaster technique before collecting any sample.
- 2. Collect a fresh individual-animal fecal sample directly from the animal or immediately after passage, wearing disposable gloves, and label the container with the animal's ID and the collection date and time.
- 3. Keep each sample cool, not frozen, and ship it to the lab per the lab's specific packing and timing instructions, never pooling samples unless the lab's own protocol calls for a pooled screen.
- 4. Complete the lab's chain-of-custody or submission form naming the animal, species, and requested test, the McMaster fecal egg count.
- 5. When results return, transcribe the lab's own eggs-per-gram result verbatim per animal, without recalculating or adjusting it.
- 6. If this is a paired pre-treatment/post-treatment sample (FECRT), record both dates and both raw eggs-per-gram results, and leave the reduction-percentage and resistance classification to the lab's own report or a veterinarian's interpretation.
- 7. Cross-reference the results against any recent FAMACHA round on the same animals, noting that fecal egg counts catch parasite species FAMACHA cannot.
