Steps

1. Measure current air temperature and relative humidity at the pen or area the herd actually occupies, using a calibrated thermometer/hygrometer or an on-farm weather station.
2. Calculate THI from the measured temperature and humidity using a cited formula or lookup table, never estimating it by feel.
3. Compare the THI reading to the modern action threshold of 68 for high-producing Holsteins and to the classic Armstrong severity bands (mild 72-79, moderate 80-90, severe above 90).
4. Measure shade area available per animal in the pens the herd actually uses at peak heat and compare it to a stated adequacy benchmark.
5. Measure water trough linear space per animal and check flow rate, and record fan or soaker cooling coverage against the areas the herd occupies.
6. Walk the herd and record any animal showing heat-stress signs: elevated respiration rate, open-mouth panting, drooling, reduced feed intake, or recumbency.
7. Enter the THI calculation, shade/water/fan measurements, and any flagged animals into the proof record; sign.
