Steps

1. 1. Approach and restrain the animal calmly; use a second handler if the animal is not accustomed to hands-on palpation.
2. 2. Palpate the six Body Condition Score sites -- neck/shoulders, withers, back, ribs, belly, hindquarters -- and assign a whole or half-point BCS from 1 (poor/emaciated) to 5 (obese), per the published scale.
