Steps

2. 2. Time the round for the pre-dawn window (the daily low point for DO, since overnight respiration continues while photosynthesis has stopped).
3. 3. Take DO readings at multiple locations per pond (at minimum, upwind and downwind ends, and any known low-circulation area), since DO can vary meaningfully within a single pond.
4. 4. Record the lowest reading per pond as the pond's DO value for the round, along with the time taken.
5. 5. Observe the pond surface for fish surfacing/gasping ('piping') behavior -- if present, treat as an IMMEDIATE emergency regardless of the numeric DO reading.
6. 6. Compare the DO reading against the 3-4 mg/L emergency-aeration threshold; if at or below, start mechanical aeration immediately.
7. 7.
