Steps
- 1. Calibrate the DO meter per the manufacturer's instructions before starting the round.
- 2. Time the round for the pre-dawn window (the daily low point for DO, since overnight respiration continues while photosynthesis has stopped).
- 3. Take DO readings at multiple locations per pond (at minimum, upwind and downwind ends, and any known low-circulation area), since DO can vary meaningfully within a single pond.
- 4. Record the lowest reading per pond as the pond's DO value for the round, along with the time taken.
- 5. Observe the pond surface for fish surfacing/gasping ('piping') behavior -- if present, treat as an IMMEDIATE emergency regardless of the numeric DO reading.
- 6. Compare the DO reading against the 3-4 mg/L emergency-aeration threshold; if at or below, start mechanical aeration immediately.
- 7. Compare the DO reading against the 2.3-2.5 mg/L confirmed production-floor threshold; note any pond sustained at or below this level even if above the emergency threshold, since Torrans 2008 found a measurable ~11% production loss and ~10% feed-intake reduction at this range over a full season.
- 8. Continue aeration past dawn until readings confirm DO is rising from photosynthetic activity, not just holding steady.
- 9. Record the full round (all ponds, readings, time, any aeration action taken, any surfacing behavior observed) and route any recurring or unexplained DO crash to a state aquaculture extension specialist or aquatic-animal-health authority.
