What the work involvesThis library's catfish DO standard covers a warm-water species; trout are a cold-water species with a much higher oxygen demand, so a genuinely distinct standard is needed rather than reusing the catfish thresholds. Steps
- 1. Calibrate the DO meter per the manufacturer's instructions before starting the round.
- 2. Measure DO at the INFLOW of each raceway/pond (freshest water, typically highest DO).
- 3. Measure DO at the OUTFLOW of each raceway/pond (after fish have consumed oxygen moving through), since this is the lowest and most consequential reading.
- 4. Record both readings per raceway, with the outflow reading treated as the pond's governing DO value.
- 5. Observe fish behavior, especially at inflow points -- abnormal crowding/huddling near fresh incoming water, or surfacing/gasping anywhere in the raceway, signals fish are actively seeking oxygen and is treated as an IMMEDIATE emergency regardless of the meter reading.
- 6. Compare the outflow reading against the 7-9 mg/L target band, the <5 mg/L stress threshold, and the <3 mg/L lethal-risk threshold.
- 7. If DO is below 5 mg/L, or any fish distress is observed, respond immediately: increase water flow rate, add supplemental aeration, or reduce stocking density in that raceway.
- 8. If DO is approaching 3 mg/L, treat as an active emergency requiring the most aggressive available intervention without delay.
- 9. Record the full round (all raceways, inflow/outflow readings, time, any intervention taken, any distress observed) and route any recurring or unexplained DO decline to a state aquaculture extension specialist or aquatic-animal-health authority.
What counts as done
- Dissolved oxygen (mg/L) measured with a calibrated meter at both the inflow and outflow of each raceway/pond, since DO drops as water moves through a raceway carrying fish
- Reading compared against the 7-9 mg/L target band, the <5 mg/L stress threshold, and the <3 mg/L lethal-risk threshold
- Visible fish distress (surfacing/gasping, or abnormal crowding at fresh-water inflow points) noted and treated as an immediate emergency independent of the numeric reading
- Comparison against the prior round's readings recorded as a trend, never a guarantee of the next reading
