Steps

1. 1. Arrange the visit at the person's chosen time; ask ahead what practical help would actually be useful (a meal, an errand, sitting with paperwork) rather than assuming. Introduce yourself as a companion, not a grief counselor.
2. 2. Spend the visit present: conversation the person leads about whatever they want to talk about (the person who died, or nothing to do with it at all), and do the practical help agreed.
3. 3. When it fits naturally, ask the two PHQ-2 items and record the total (0-6); say it is a way of checking in, not a test.
4. 4. Let the person set the pace on what they share about the relationship and the loss; never ask for details they have not offered, never probe for a 'stage' of grief.
5. 5. Note anything that is not a companion's to handle (see the decision rules) and route it.
6. 6. Agree whether and when to return before leaving (the item's own 90-day window is a design boundary for this packet, not a limit on how long grief itself lasts); log the visit in the person's own words.
