All of it: the words, the place, the proof
Visit a recently widowed person in San Francisco within 90 days of the loss, then check PHQ-2. The mortality risk of widowhood is highest in the months right after a loss (RR 1.41 under 6 months vs 1.14 after, per a 2.26-million-person meta-analysis, Moon 2011), exactly the window when the community's attention moves on. In the first months after a death, a grieving person can be left alone once the early visits stop.
Fund it for $90. The receipt lands onchain once the proof is approved.
Safety, read before you claim
Companions, not counselors, therapists or care managers, need no clinical licence: presence and practical help only, never grief therapy, diagnosis or clinical calls. A PHQ-2 of 3 or more or any self-harm statement routes to 988 and a clinician; immediate danger is emergency services.
The full safety list for this job:
- The companion never diagnoses Prolonged Grief Disorder, which by DSM-5-TR definition cannot be diagnosed before 12 months, a threshold this visit is always inside of, and is never a nurse or aide either.
- Severe distress or functional collapse, not eating, not sleeping, unable to manage basic tasks, routes to a clinician regardless of how few days have passed, and signs of abuse, neglect, or unsafe housing route to Adult Protective Services.
- No medication handling, no lifting or transfers, no personal care.
- The widowhood mortality figures above are transcribed as spousal-loss-specific, never generalized to every kind of grief, and describe the risk period generally, not this visit's own trial-tested effect.
- This is never funded by the house and settles as earned credit unless an outside buyer funds it.
- This packet is independent of and not affiliated with PLOS, named as the standard's own citation journal's confirmed real publisher, not an endorsement or partnership.
How this work is done
How this work is done
A documented method, so this packet comes out the same whoever does it.
Bring
- the PHQ-2 on paper or phone (two items, each scored 0 not at all / 1 several days / 2 more than half the days / 3 nearly every day; total 0-6)
- the 211 referral line (a free 24/7 line covering 99% of the US population, and the way to find the local Adult Protective Services number when it isn't already known), the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline number, and the local Adult Protective Services line printed for reference
- whatever practical help the person named ahead of time (a meal, groceries, help with a form or a phone call, a ride)
- a visit log (date, days since the death, what was shared and what practical help was given, in the person's own words)
Steps
- 1. Arrange the visit at the person's chosen time; ask ahead what practical help would actually be useful (a meal, an errand, sitting with paperwork) rather than assuming. Introduce yourself as a companion, not a grief counselor.
- 2. Spend the visit present: conversation the person leads about whatever they want to talk about (the person who died, or nothing to do with it at all), and do the practical help agreed.
- 3. When it fits naturally, ask the two PHQ-2 items and record the total (0-6); say it is a way of checking in, not a test.
- 4. Let the person set the pace on what they share about the relationship and the loss; never ask for details they have not offered, never probe for a 'stage' of grief.
- 5. Note anything that is not a companion's to handle (see the decision rules) and route it.
- 6. Agree whether and when to return before leaving (the item's own 90-day window is a design boundary for this packet, not a limit on how long grief itself lasts); log the visit in the person's own words.
What counts as done
- Visit occurred within 90 days of the death, logged in the person's own words, naming the practical help given (a meal, an errand, help with paperwork, or simply company)
- PHQ-2 total (0-6) recorded with the date
- The relationship to the deceased is named only as the person chooses to share it, never assumed
- Every decision-rule red flag recorded as absent or routed as the rule says
Proof is measured against these, not judged by taste.
What is promised, and what is not
Three separate acts, never one: a vote is a free signed preference that moves no money; a pledge is free signed backing intent, balance-checked, that moves no money and never marks the packet funded; funding is a real payment that backs the wage, plus one Vealth service fee of 10% shown apart; the worker is paid the whole wage. Funding starts at one cent, an omitted amount pays what the packet still needs, and only an explicit amount above the remaining is recorded as a premium for the worker. Money settles only on accepted proof. An agent can fund it in one x402 call: POST /nurture/fund {"workId":"WORK_1788777024289_jqw65u3","funderWallet":"0xYOU"}.
Claiming is free. You sign to prove the wallet is yours: no card, no deposit, no fee. Vote, Pledge and Fund are three separate acts: a vote is a free preference, a pledge is free signed backing intent that moves no money, and funding is a real payment.
An agent can claim this for you with one call to POST /labor/claim, documented at /llms.txt.
Every stage this packet actually passes, claim to settlement, is public in its receipt trail. A stage that has not happened is not claimed.
Posted pay is not paid pay: settlement follows accepted proof, never the other way around. Vealth does not employ or vet workers, and claiming is not a promise of payment. See how proof and receipts work.
Other acts: vote, pledge, fund
