Steps

  1. 1. Confirm the receiving laboratory is an accredited veterinary diagnostic laboratory that runs the McMaster technique, and follow its own current sample-size, timing, and shipping instructions before collecting.
  2. 2. Collect FRESH fecal samples directly from the rectum or immediately after defecation (never off the ground, which risks free-living larval contamination) from individual animals, labeled by animal ID and collection time.
  3. 3. Keep samples cool (not frozen) and ship or deliver to the lab within the lab's stated window — McMaster counts degrade in old or improperly stored samples.
  4. 4. For a fecal egg count reduction test (FECRT), collect the pre-treatment sample the same day treatment is given, and the paired post-treatment sample 10-14 days later (per WAAVP timing) from the SAME individually-identified animals.
  5. 5. Record the lab's returned EPG result verbatim per animal (or per pooled group, if that was the lab's own protocol) — never estimate or interpolate a number the lab did not report.
  6. 6. Cross-reference against any recent FAMACHA round on the same animals: FAMACHA catches Haemonchus-driven anemia specifically, while FEC catches total strongyle-type egg burden across genera FAMACHA cannot see on its own.
