Steps

1. Approach and restrain the animal calmly; use a second handler if the animal is not accustomed to hands-on palpation.
2. Palpate the six Body Condition Score sites -- neck/shoulders, withers, back, ribs, belly, hindquarters -- and assign a whole or half-point BCS from 1 (poor/emaciated) to 5 (obese), per the published scale.
3. Measure neck thickness with a soft tape at the mid-neck point and combine with palpation of the crest to assign a Fatty Neck Score (FNS) 1-5 -- do NOT skip the tape measurement, since FNS by palpation alone is less reliable and the published study found FNS the strongest driver of dorsal-profile shape/size.
4. Assess the incisors and chewing ability and assign a Dental Condition Score (DCS) 0 (normal) to 2 (poor).
5. Record all three scores per animal, dated, with animal ID.
6. Compare against the animal's prior round to track a trend, not just a snapshot.
7. Flag any animal scoring 1-2 or 5 on BCS or FNS, or 2 on DCS, for a donkey-experienced or equine veterinarian.
8. Log the full round (all scored animals, dated) and route flagged animals per the decision rules.
