Steps
- 1. Confirm the seed is fully dry, hard, and snaps rather than bends, from the prior rung before cleaning; damp seed is never cleaned or stored, it goes back to drying.
- 2. Rub the dried pods or seed heads gently by hand over a clean container to break the seed loose from the surrounding chaff and pulp.
- 3. Pass the seed and chaff mix through a screen or sieve sized to let the seed through and hold back larger chaff, working over a clean tray.
- 4. Winnow the remaining fine chaff from the seed by pouring it between two containers in a light breeze or in front of a small fan, or by gently blowing across a shallow tray, repeating until only clean seed remains; photograph the cleaned seed.
