- 2. Stand still for five minutes without any white light, letting eyes adjust to the dark before counting anything.
- 3. Count the number of individual flashes or flying points of light seen in the five minute window, and note the general weather and how damp the ground feels underfoot.
- 4. Record the date, time, count, and conditions in a simple weekly log, and photograph the yard in daylight once at the start of the season as a location record.

What is promised, and what is not
