Steps
- Photograph the pit as found; note compaction, trash, girdling material and whether the trunk flare is buried.
- Clear trash and weeds by hand; free any girdling wire that lifts away without cutting bark.
- Hand-fork the top 2-3 inches around roots, never cut them; expose the trunk flare.
- Lay a 3-inch mulch ring clear of the trunk, water thoroughly, and photograph the finished pit.

What is promised, and what is not
