Steps

  1. Photograph each frontage pit as found; note compaction, trash, girdling material and buried flares.
  2. Clear trash and weeds by hand; free girdling material that lifts away without cutting bark.
  3. Hand-fork the top 2–3 inches around roots (never cut); expose the trunk flare.
  4. Lay a 3-inch mulch ring clear of the trunk and water thoroughly.
  5. Photograph finished pits from matching vantage; report limb or trunk problems to the city urban-forestry line.
