All of it: the words, the place, the proof
Survey California bay laurel leaves for the trained sudden oak death lesion pattern and submit a labeled sample to the region's official SOD Blitz program. Phytophthora ramorum has killed tens of millions of oaks and tanoaks across coastal California and southwest Oregon, and bay laurel carries and spreads the spores for years before a nearby oak shows any sign. A trained volunteer walking a known route during the program's own spring survey window turns an ordinary neighborhood or park walk into a real data point the Garbelotto Lab's genetic testing can act on — exactly the citizen-science network that caught a more aggressive pathogen genotype in 2024.

How this work is done
How this work is done
A documented method, so this packet comes out the same whoever does it.
Bring
- The current-season SOD Blitz (or Oregon SOD Program) training materials, completed before the survey
- Sample collection bags/envelopes and labels per the program's own collection packet
- A smartphone with GPS/location services, or the program's own mapping tool, for per-sample coordinates
- A tree/plant-ID reference for confirming California bay laurel versus a look-alike species
Steps
- 1. Complete a current-season SOD Blitz training session (in person or recorded, via COMTF/the Garbelotto Lab and NORS-DUC) or, in Oregon, the ODA SOD Program's own training, before surveying any site.
- 2. Walk a planned route through the training area's parks, neighborhood, or trail during the program's own designated spring survey window (typically April-May, timed to peak wet-season spore transmission).
- 3. On each California bay laurel encountered, inspect the leaves for the diagnostic lesion: a brown-to-gray discoloration usually starting at the leaf tip (or wherever water pools on an off-angle leaf), with an irregular, wavy, chlorotic (yellow) halo margin, sometimes with small satellite spots near the larger lesion.
- 4. Collect symptomatic leaves per the program's own collection-packet instructions — bag and label each sample with the site's GPS point and date — and never collect from a tree species the training did not cover.
- 5. Record the precise GPS location for every collection point using the program's own mapping tool or a smartphone.
- 6. While surveying, note but never diagnose any nearby oak or tanoak trunk showing the separate lethal-canker pattern — red-brown to black discoloration bleeding dark red, black, or amber sap on otherwise intact bark, typically 1-2 meters above ground — and report it by name to the program's regional coordinator (or, in Oregon, the ODA SOD Program) alongside the leaf submission.
- 7. Submit the labeled sample set to the Garbelotto Lab (or the Oregon program's own intake) through the collection event's own drop-off point or shipping instructions, and record the submission date.
- 8. Never move bay laurel, oak, or tanoak leaf, wood, or nursery material out of the survey area — Phytophthora ramorum is a federally regulated quarantine pathogen (7 CFR 301.92) with parallel state quarantine programs, and unauthorized movement of host material out of infested areas is restricted by law.
What counts as done
- Current-season SOD Blitz (or, in Oregon, the ODA SOD Program) training completed before surveying, with the program and session date named
- Every California bay laurel checked for the trained leaf-tip lesion pattern (brown-to-gray discoloration, irregular chlorotic halo margin, generally where water collects on the leaf), with a GPS location and collection date recorded per sample taken
- Any nearby oak or tanoak trunk showing the separate bleeding-canker pattern noted and reported by name to the program's regional coordinator (California) or the Oregon Department of Agriculture SOD Program (Oregon), never diagnosed or acted on by the observer
- Labeled sample set submitted through the program's own collection or shipping channel, with the submission date recorded
- No bay laurel, oak, or tanoak leaf, wood, or nursery material moved out of the survey area at any point
Proof is measured against these, not judged by taste.
What is promised, and what is not
Three separate acts, never one: a vote is a free signed preference that moves no money; a pledge is free signed backing intent, balance-checked, that moves no money and never marks the packet funded; funding is a real payment that backs the wage. Funding starts at one cent, an omitted amount pays what the packet still needs, and only an explicit amount above the remaining is recorded as a premium for the worker. Money settles only on accepted proof. An agent can fund it in one x402 call: POST /nurture/fund {"workId":"WORK_1790125392082_3cvc5ov","funderWallet":"0xYOU"}.
Claiming is free. You sign to prove the wallet is yours: no card, no deposit, no fee. Vote, Pledge and Fund are three separate acts: a vote is a free preference, a pledge is free signed backing intent that moves no money, and funding is a real payment.
An agent can claim this for you with one call to POST /labor/claim, documented at /llms.txt.
Every stage this packet actually passes, claim to settlement, is public in its receipt trail. A stage that has not happened is not claimed.
Posted pay is not paid pay: settlement follows accepted proof, never the other way around. Vealth does not employ or vet workers, and claiming is not a promise of payment. See how proof and receipts work.
Other acts: vote, pledge, fund
