Steps

  1. 1. Confirm the site is open ground with no trees or structures taller than the finished housing within 40 feet, and preferably 60 feet, in every direction, and photograph the open site before starting.
  2. 2. Assemble the martin house or gourd rack compartments at ground level on a telescoping or winch-and-pulley pole built to be lowered for every future visit, never a fixed pole that would need to be climbed.
  3. 3. Raise the pole using its winch or telescoping sections to a final housing height of about 14 to 18 feet, set the pole base securely, and fit a predator guard on the pole below the housing.
  4. 4. Lower the pole once more to confirm the mechanism cranks smoothly down and back up with the housing attached, then leave it raised, and photograph the finished housing with the open surrounding ground visible.
