  • A toothpick or matchstick for the ropey-larva test, used ONLY on suspect cells
  • A dated hive-inspection log with frame-by-frame notes (and a camera/phone for photos where practical)
  • Contact information for the state apiarist / apiary inspection program on file BEFORE inspecting

Steps

  1. 1. Light the smoker and open the hive calmly; work from the outside frames inward to minimize disturbance.
  2. 2. Assess queen-right status from eggs, young larvae, and a consistent brood pattern — a queen sighting is not required.
  3. 3. Score the brood pattern: solid vs spotty capped brood, proportion of empty cells within the brood area, and overall frame coverage.
  4. 4. Check food stores: capped honey and pollen frames present and appropriately positioned for the season.
  5. 5. Observe every capped-brood frame for disease SIGNS ONLY: sunken or perforated cappings, discolored or greasy-looking larvae/pupae, a foul or unusual odor.
  6. 6. On any suspect cell, run the ropey test: insert a toothpick into the dead larva/pupa, stir gently, and withdraw slowly — a mucoid thread stringing out roughly an inch is the classic AFB sign; record positive or negative.
  7. 7. Record every finding by frame, with a photo where practical; do not scrape, sample, or treat any suspect cell beyond the ropey-test observation.
  8. 8. Route any AFB-suspect finding to the state apiarist / apiary inspection program immediately per the decision rules, and close the hive.

What counts as done

  • Queen-right status and brood-pattern quality recorded from eggs/larvae/capping evidence across the frames inspected
  • Food stores (capped honey and pollen) recorded
  • Every capped-brood frame observed for disease signs; any suspect cell's ropey-test result recorded
  • Any positive or ambiguous foulbrood sign routed by name to the Georgia Department of Agriculture apiary program, with confirmation that no home treatment, culture, or equipment move occurred

Proof is measured against these, not judged by taste.

What is promised, and what is not
