Bring

  • A clean soil probe, trowel, or spade (avoid galvanized or brass tools if micronutrients will be tested — they can contaminate readings)
  • A clean plastic bucket for compositing cores
  • The chosen lab's current submission form and sample bag/box (many county extension offices stock ready-made kits)
  • A way to mail or hand-deliver the sample with the lab's fee

Steps

  1. 1. Choose the land-grant extension lab serving the sampling location (e.g. Penn State AASL, UMass Amherst Soil & Plant Nutrient Testing Lab, or the sampler's own state land-grant lab) and pull its current published sampling instructions before digging.
  2. 2. Divide the property into zones that share history and use (e.g. vegetable bed vs lawn vs new planting) — one composite sample per zone, never one sample for mixed-use ground.
  3. 3. Collect 8-10+ cores/slices per zone at the lab's specified depth (commonly ~4 inches for turf, 6-8 inches for garden beds) walking a random pattern across the zone.
  4. 4. Mix the cores together in the clean bucket, remove roots/stones/mulch/thatch, and fill the lab's sample container to the stated amount.
  5. 5. Complete the lab's submission form exactly as it asks (crop/use to be grown, zone name, recent lime/manure history) — the form drives which recommendation the lab returns.
  6. 6. Submit the sample with the required fee by the lab's specified method (mail-in or county extension office drop-off); record the submission date and any tracking/order number.
  7. 7. When the report returns, transcribe its findings (pH, nutrient levels, recommendation) verbatim into the record — never add, edit, or extrapolate a different rate.

What counts as done

  • An INTA RILSAV-network laboratory named and its published sampling protocol followed: zoning by land use/history, core depth, number of cores, compositing method
  • Submission completed accurately and the sample submitted with any required fee; submission date and tracking/order reference recorded
  • Lab's own report attached, or its pH/nutrient findings and recommendation transcribed verbatim, in the language the lab issued it
  • Any amendment or planting plan recorded strictly as the LAB's stated recommendation, never a packet-authored rate

Proof is measured against these, not judged by taste.

What is promised, and what is not
