Steps
- 1. Look up the state's and locality's own current rainwater-collection rules before evaluating the system; never assume another state's limit (e.g. Colorado's 110-gallon, 2-barrel residential cap) applies elsewhere.
- 2. Inspect the first-flush diverter (tipping-bucket, float-ball, or equivalent) and confirm it is present, not bypassed, and actually diverting the initial roof runoff away from the storage tank.
- 3. Inspect gutters, screens, and the tank inlet for debris, and clear any blockage that would let leaves or roof debris bypass the diverter.
- 4. Open the tank (where safely accessible) and check for algae growth, mosquito larvae, or other pest activity; confirm the tank stays light-tight since algae needs light to grow.
- 5. Confirm the system's storage capacity against any state-specific volume limit and record whether it complies.
- 6. Confirm and label the water's intended use as non-potable (irrigation, outdoor washing) unless documented treatment (filtration plus disinfection) and the relevant health authority's approval are already in place.
- 7. Route any suspected illness linked to contact with or use of the harvested water to the local health department, and any legal-status question to the state or local water authority, never guessed.
