Steps

  1. 1. Photograph the plant: a whole-plant/patch shot, a close-up of a diagnostic feature (leaf, flower, fruit, bark), and a wide shot showing the surrounding habitat.
  2. 2. Record the precise location using the device's GPS (via the EDDMapS app) or a manually logged coordinate — never an approximate address.
  3. 3. Estimate and record the patch size/extent (single plant, small patch, or a rough acreage) as honestly as the observer can judge it.
  4. 4. State an honest ID-confidence level: certain (matches all diagnostic features), likely (matches most features), or uncertain (flag for expert review) — never round up to 'certain' to complete the record.
  5. 5. Submit the report through EDDMapS (web or app) with the photos, location, and confidence level attached.
  6. 6. For a genuinely uncertain ID, also route the photos to a state or regional invasive-species verifier (many EDDMapS regional networks and extension offices offer ID help) before treating the report as confirmed.
  7. 7. If removal is being considered, assess scope: hand-pulling a small, isolated patch (roots included where the species allows) is within scope; anything larger, resprouting, or requiring cutting/mechanical equipment or ANY herbicide routes to a professional invasive-species contractor or the local Cooperative Weed Management Area/extension office.

What is promised, and what is not
