Pseudogymnoascus destructans has caused unprecedented hibernating-bat mortality across North America since 2006, and an early, well-documented sighting reported to the right agency is the only contribution a keeper can safely make -- a bat is never something to pick up, examine closely, or move.

Bring
- A phone camera with zoom, used from a safe distance (never approaching or touching a bat)
- Disposable gloves and a sealable plastic bag, used only for removing a dead bat found on a property
- Isopropyl alcohol (50-70%) or access to hot water >=55C (131F), if gear was near a cave, mine, or bat roost
- Contact information for the state wildlife agency or the WNS Response Team's local-bat-expert page, on file BEFORE the observation
Steps
- 1. From a safe distance, observe for WNS signs: white fungal growth on the muzzle, wings, ears, or tail, or a bat flying outside during the day in freezing or near-freezing temperatures.
- 2. Photograph the bat and its surroundings from that same safe distance; never approach, touch, or attempt to move a live bat.
- 3. Record the location, date, and species if it can be identified without handling.
- 4. Submit the observation to the state wildlife agency's own bat-reporting form or the WNS Response Team's local-bat-expert contact page, and record the submission date.
- 5. If a dead bat is found on the property, remove it only with disposable gloves and a sealed plastic bag, per state wildlife agency guidance; never handle it bare-handed.
- 6. If the observer visited a cave, mine, or bat roost as part of this work, decontaminate all gear before it moves to another site: submerge in water >=55C for 5+ continuous minutes, or apply isopropyl alcohol 50-70% for more than 20 seconds of contact.
- 7. Never move gear from a more-contaminated WNS management area (Endemic or Intermediate) to a less-contaminated one (At-risk), per the national protocol's own rule.
- 8. Log the observation, the report's submission date and destination, and any decontamination performed in a dated record.
What counts as done
- Any suspected WNS sign (white fungal growth on muzzle/wings/ears/tail, or daytime winter flight at/below freezing) photographed from a safe distance without touching the animal
- Location, date, and species (if identifiable without handling) recorded with the photograph
- Report submitted to the state wildlife agency or the WNS Response Team's own local-bat-expert contact page, with the submission date recorded
- Any dead bat found on a property removed only with disposable gloves and a sealed plastic bag, never bare hands, per state wildlife agency guidance
- If the site visit involved a cave, mine, or bat roost, gear decontaminated per the national protocol (hot water >=55C for 5+ minutes, or isopropyl alcohol 50-70% for >20 seconds) before it moves to another site

What is promised, and what is not
