Steps

  1. 1. Confirm eligibility for urgent-priority screening: home built before 1986 (lead solder ban), a known or suspected lead service line, or a child under 6 / pregnant person in the household.
  2. 2. Contact the local water utility to ask directly whether a lead service line serves the property (many utilities maintain a public lead service line inventory/map under current EPA rule requirements).
  3. 3. Following the certified lab's kit instructions exactly, collect a FIRST-DRAW sample after the required non-use period (no flushing, first water out of the tap).
  4. 4. Following the same kit's instructions, collect a FULLY FLUSHED sample after running the tap for the lab-specified flush time.
  5. 5. Complete the chain-of-custody form noting the collection tap, non-use period, and any known plumbing/service-line facts.
  6. 6. Record the lab's reported first-draw and flushed lead results once received, in micrograms/L (ppb), with the lab's name and certification.
  7. 7. Compare both results only to EPA's action-level framing (currently 15 ppb at the system level; EPA is proposing 10 µg/L) — record the comparison, never a household 'safe' verdict, and route per the decision rules.
