Steps

1. Locate the wellhead and confirm the casing extends a safe height above final grade per state/local well-construction code.
2. Inspect the well cap/seal: confirm it is a secure, tamper-resistant, vermin-proof sanitary cap with an intact screened vent, and note any cracks, gaps, or missing hardware.
3. Inspect grading immediately around the casing: confirm the ground slopes AWAY from the wellhead (no ponding or runoff directed toward the casing).
4. Measure and record setback distances from the wellhead to the nearest septic tank/drainfield, livestock housing or feedlot area, and fuel/chemical storage; compare each to the state/local minimum setback requirement.
5. Walk the property for any other unused, abandoned, or unidentified wells; note the location and condition of each.
6. Photograph and date-stamp the cap, casing, grading, and any setback violation or unused well found.
7. Route every finding: cap/seal or casing repair to a licensed well contractor, any setback shortfall to the state/local well program for guidance, and any unused/abandoned well to a licensed well contractor for proper decommissioning (sealing) — never left open or informally capped.
