Steps
- 1. Determine the water source: utility-served (check the most recent Consumer Confidence Report and EPA's UCMR 5 monitoring data for existing PFAS results) or a private well (no existing monitoring exists — the owner IS the water system, same law as the private-well-annual-screen standard).
- 2. Select a certified laboratory accredited for EPA Method 533 or 537.1 PFAS analysis (state drinking-water certification programs and NELAP accreditation directories list qualified labs).
- 3. Follow the lab's PFAS-specific sample-collection instructions exactly — PFAS sampling requires avoiding contamination sources common in ordinary household life (fluorinated sunscreen/cosmetics, waterproof/treated clothing, specific bottle materials) that can bias results at these part-per-trillion detection levels.
- 4. Record any known or suspected nearby PFAS source (current/former military base or airport with firefighting-foam use, industrial manufacturing, a landfill) as awareness context — never as a substitute for the lab result.
- 5. When results return, report PFOA and PFOS in ppt (ng/L) and compare each explicitly to the CURRENT 4.0 ppt MCL — verify this number is still current before citing it, since it is subject to change through EPA rulemaking.
- 6. Report PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA (GenX), PFBS, and any other panel analyte with their values, and state their CURRENT regulatory status explicitly (as of 2026-08-30: a rescission of their MCLs and the Hazard Index is PROPOSED, not final) rather than comparing them to a number that may no longer be an enforceable standard by the time this record is read.
- 7. Route any PFOA/PFOS result above 4.0 ppt, or any panel result the household wants interpreted, to the local water utility (utility-served) or a certified lab consultation (private well); this packet never recommends a treatment technology or product.
