Bring
- A collection container for at least 100 bees
- 70% ethyl, methyl, or isopropyl alcohol
- A leak-proof container for shipping
- Paper bags or newspaper (never plastic, foil, or glass) if also submitting a brood-comb section
- A notebook or phone to log field signs and the shipping date
Steps
- 1. Observe and log field signs (dwindling adult population despite adequate stores, poor spring buildup, reduced honey yield) as nonspecific observations, never as a diagnosis.
- 2. Collect at least 100 bees, preferring bees that are dying or died very recently; decomposed bees are unsatisfactory for examination.
- 3. Soak the bees in 70% ethyl, methyl, or isopropyl alcohol as soon as possible after collection, and pack them in a leak-proof container.
- 4. If also submitting a brood-comb sample, cut a section at least 2x2 inches containing as much dead or discolored brood as possible, with no honey present, wrapped in paper or newspaper inside a cardboard box.
- 5. Just before shipping, pour off all excess alcohol, since major carriers (USPS, UPS, FedEx) do not accept shipments containing alcohol.
- 6. Mail the sample to the USDA ARS Bee Research Laboratory's Bee Disease Diagnosis Service with a brief problem description and the keeper's name, address, phone, and/or email.
- 7. Record the lab's result as genus-level only (Nosema present or absent); never record or imply a species-level (N. apis vs N. ceranae) result, since the lab itself does not provide one.
- 8. Route any treatment decision to the state apiarist or Cooperative Extension under current label law; never self-prescribe fumagillin or any other treatment from this packet.

- Field signs (dwindling population, poor buildup, reduced honey yield) recorded as nonspecific observations, never recorded as a Nosema diagnosis
- 120 bees collected from the honey frame per NBDC's own current sample-submission protocol
- Nosema Count and, where species-level information is wanted, Nosema Species Identification requested by name and paid for as NBDC's own priced services
- Sample mailed to the National Bee Diagnostic Centre with the submission form NBDC's own page names
- Any species-level result (N. apis vs N. ceranae), if ordered, recorded exactly as reported, never assumed when only the basic count was requested
- Any treatment decision routed to a provincial apiarist, veterinarian, or Cooperative-Extension-equivalent authority under current label law, never self-prescribed from this packet

What is promised, and what is not
