Steps

  1. 1. Confirm the household is on a private well (not a public/community system) and locate a state-certified laboratory; order the standard panel: total coliform bacteria, E. coli, nitrate (as N), total dissolved solids (TDS), pH.
  2. 2. Follow the lab's own collection instructions exactly (sanitize the tap for bacteria samples, correct bottle/preservative per parameter, correct fill line) — improvised collection invalidates the health-based read.
  3. 3. Complete and sign the chain-of-custody form; note collection date/time and sampling point (kitchen tap unless the lab specifies otherwise).
  4. 4. Deliver/ship the samples within the lab's required holding time (bacteria samples are especially time-sensitive, often 24-30 hours).
  5. 5. Record the lab's reported values once received, with the lab's own name and certification stated.
  6. 6. Compare EACH result only to its published standard: total coliform/E. coli presence-absence; nitrate vs the EPA MCL of 10 mg/L as N; TDS/pH vs EPA secondary (aesthetic) guidance — record the comparison, never a household 'safe' verdict.
