- confirm with the resident whether the second unit's contents are still needed, then, with the resident, decide whether it can be retired outright or consolidated, moving any food that is still wanted into the household's primary refrigerator or freezer first.
- Unplug the second unit once it is empty, and, following the standard child-safety practice for a stored or discarded refrigerator, secure or remove the door so it cannot latch anyone inside while it awaits pickup.
- Contact the municipal solid-waste department or the local utility's appliance-recycling program to arrange scheduled collection, since a refrigerator's refrigerant and insulating foam are regulated and must be handled through that channel, never by removing the refrigerant or disabling the unit directly.
- Photograph the emptied, unplugged, door-secured unit staged for collection, and record the scheduled pickup confirmation from the municipal or utility program.
