Bring
- A calm, non-slip, towel-lined handling surface (table or lap) -- an improperly supported rabbit that struggles can fracture its own spine
- A gram or kitchen scale for weighing the rabbit at each round, as an objective anchor point alongside the palpation score
- A recording sheet or app with animal ID, rater identity, scale version used (5-point or expanded 9-point), and prior-round score/weight fields
Steps
- 1. Support the rabbit's full body weight, including the hindquarters, at all times -- never lift or hold a rabbit by the ears or scruff alone, and never let it struggle unsupported, since this is a well-documented spinal-fracture risk in this species.
- 2. Palpate along the spine from shoulders to hips, feeling how easily the vertebrae can be felt through the fur and the muscle/fat cover beneath.
- 3. Palpate the hip bones (pelvis) and the ribs similarly, assessing fat and muscle cover at each site.
- 4. Assign a score using ONE consistent scale version (the original 5-point RSOM or the expanded 9-point scale) and record which version was used, since the two scales are not directly interchangeable.
- 5. Weigh the rabbit and record the weight alongside the palpation score as an objective anchor point the palpation score alone can't provide.
- 6. Record the identity of the rater performing the scoring -- the reliability data show scores from different raters, even experienced ones, should not be compared directly to each other.
- 7. Compare the new score and weight ONLY against the SAME rater's own prior round for this rabbit, never against a different rater's number, to establish a trend.
- 8. Flag immediately, ahead of the routine round, any rabbit that has stopped eating or producing fecal pellets for 12+ hours, is bloated, hunched, or lethargic -- these are gastrointestinal (GI) stasis emergency signs.
- 9. Flag a persistently thin or obese score, or an unexplained rapid change in the same rater's trend, for a rabbit-experienced or exotic-companion-mammal veterinarian.
- 10. Log the full round (rabbit ID, rater, scale version, score, weight, date) so future same-rater comparisons remain possible.

- Each rabbit scored 1-5 (or the expanded 1-9 scale, version noted) by palpation over the spine, hips, and ribs, never by visual/fur assessment alone
- Weight recorded alongside the palpation score as an objective anchor point
- Comparison recorded ONLY against the same rater's own prior round -- never a different rater's number -- per the reliability data
- Any rabbit that has stopped eating or producing fecal pellets for 12+ hours flagged as an IMMEDIATE gastrointestinal stasis emergency, ahead of and separate from the routine scoring round
- Persistent thin/obese scores or an unexplained trend change flagged for a rabbit-experienced or exotic-companion-mammal veterinarian
