Steps

1. Complete all 17 CADES items exactly as published, scoring the frequency of each behavior change over the recent period the instrument specifies, across all four domains: spatial orientation, social interactions, sleep-wake cycles, house soiling.
2. Sum the total score and compare against the published bands: 0-7 normal aging, 8-23 mild cognitive impairment, 24-44 moderate cognitive impairment, 45 and above severe cognitive dysfunction.
3. Compare against any prior CADES score to record a trend, not just a single snapshot.
4. Walk the home at the dog's own eye/floor level: check traction on hardwood/tile floors (bare or with runners/mats), ramp or step access to furniture and stairs the dog regularly uses, and lighting along the dog's usual nighttime paths to food, water, and the door.
5. Record specific, concrete fixes the owner can make (e.g. 'add a non-slip runner from the bedroom to the kitchen,' 'add a ramp to the couch,' 'add a night light near the water bowl') rather than a general 'make it safer' note.
6. Note any sudden or severe change (a big jump from the prior score, new disorientation, new house soiling, or new nighttime distress) as urgent.
7. Route the score and trend to a veterinarian: any score in the mild band or above, or any worsening trend, needs a medical-exclusion workup before cognitive dysfunction is assumed; do not start any supplement, diet, or medication from this packet.
